The Sedation Journey
What to Expect: Before, During & After
Before Your Appointment
Pre-Sedation Assessment
Your dentist will first see you for a normal consultation and treatment plan. After that, you’ll complete a pre-admission form, which includes your medical history and the details of your support person. Once we receive your form, we’ll review it and give you a quick call to go over your medical information, answer any questions, and explain the instructions for your sedation.
We usually reach out about one week before your procedure, but if you have any questions sooner, you’re always welcome to email us.
The Days Leading Up to Your Procedure
We’ll organise a short phone call with you to go over:
your medical history
fasting instructions
medications
what to expect on the day
any questions you may have
We’ll also confirm the support person who will bring you to your appointment, collect you afterwards and stay with you for the following 24 hours.
You’ll receive clear pre-operative instructions so you know exactly how to prepare.
During Your Appointment
Getting Settled
When you arrive at the clinic, you’ll be welcomed by the team and taken through final checks.
Once everything is confirmed, Dr Ryan will place a small IV line (cannula) in your arm.
If needed, we can use a numbing patch to make this more comfortable. Please make sure you advise us prior.
Sedation Begins
Once the IV is in place, the sedation medication is given slowly.
Medications we commonly use include:
Midazolam
Fentanyl
Propofol
These help you feel relaxed, drowsy, and calm. Some people drift off to sleep, while others stay awake but feel detached. Either way, most people remember very little afterwards.
Treatment & Monitoring
During your procedure, you will be closely monitored using hospital-grade equipment.
We keep a constant eye on your:
oxygen levels (SpO2)
breathing (EtCO₂)
heart rate (ECG)
blood pressure (NIBP)
overall comfort and responsiveness
Dr Ryan will adjust the medication as needed to keep you comfortable, especially during the more involved parts of your dental treatment.
If required, we may also give medications like pain relief or anti-nausea medication to support your recovery.
After Your Appointment
Recovery at the Clinic
When your treatment is complete, Dr Ryan will gently decrease the sedation medication to bring you out of the relaxed state.
You’ll remain at the clinic for about 30–60 minutes while you wake up fully.
During this time, we’ll continue to monitor you and help with anything you need, including nausea, discomfort or bleeding management.
Dr Ryan will speak directly with your support person to go through the post-operative instructions and what to expect for the rest of the day.
Heading Home & Resting
Once you’re stable, you’ll be able to head home with your support person.
For the rest of the day:
take it easy
rest and stay hydrated
eat something light when you feel ready
avoid driving, alcohol or major decisions for 24 hours
follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions
Most patients feel back to normal by the next day.
