Frequently Asked Questions
We know sedation can feel unfamiliar, especially if it’s your first time.
These are the questions we’re asked most often, along with straightforward answers to help you feel confident and informed.
1. What is twilight sedation?
Twilight sedation is a gentle form of intravenous (IV) sedation that helps you feel relaxed and calm during dental treatment. You won’t be fully asleep, but most people remember very little of their appointment once it’s over.
2. Will I be asleep?
Not fully. You’ll be in a deeply relaxed, dream-like state.
You’ll remain conscious enough to respond but often won’t recall much of the appointment once the sedation wears off.
3. Is twilight sedation safe?
Yes. When performed by a trained sedation provider and properly monitored, twilight sedation is very safe.
Throughout the procedure, we continuously monitor your oxygen levels, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
4. Who is sedation suitable for?
Sedation may be recommended if you:
feel anxious or fearful about dental treatment
have had a difficult dental experience in the past
have a strong gag reflex
struggle to stay still
need long or complex treatment
prefer a calmer experience
We assess each patient individually to ensure it’s safe and appropriate.
5. How do I prepare for my sedation appointment?
We will give you personalised instructions, but generally you will need to:
fast for a set time before the appointment
take your regular medications unless advised otherwise
organise a support person to bring you, take you home, and stay with you
wear loose, comfortable clothing
We will go through everything during your pre-sedation phone call.
6. What happens during sedation?
A small IV line is placed, and sedation medication is administered slowly.
You will then feel calm, relaxed and drowsy.
Your dentist completes the treatment while Dr Ryan monitors you continuously.
Once finished, you will rest at the clinic until for 30-60 mins whilst Dr Ryan instructs your support person the post-operative instructions. Then you will be ready to go home with your support person.
7. Will I feel pain during the procedure?
Most patients feel very little to no discomfort.
Sedation helps reduce awareness and anxiety, while local anaesthetic keeps the area numb.
8. How will I feel afterwards?
You may feel sleepy, unsteady or forgetful for a few hours, this is normal.
Plan to rest for the day, eat lightly and avoid any major decisions, driving or alcohol for 24 hours.
9. Can I drive after sedation?
No.
You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.
Driving isn’t safe for at least 24 hours after sedation.
10. How long does recovery take?
Most people feel back to normal the next day.
Full recovery can vary depending on your medical history and the dental procedure you’ve had done.
11. What if I’m anxious on the day?
That’s completely okay.
We work with anxious patients every day and will guide you through each step.
You’re welcome to tell us how you’re feeling, we are here to support you.
12. What dental treatments can be done under sedation?
Most treatments can be completed under IV sedation, including:
wisdom teeth removal
implants
All-on-X
root canal treatment
fillings
crowns
cosmetic procedures
general dentistry
Your dentist will let you know if your treatment is suitable.
13. What if I have medical conditions or take medications?
We assess every patient individually to ensure sedation is safe.
Having medical conditions or medications does not automatically rule you out, but it’s important you tell us everything during your assessment.
